Job Description:  Overview:

Since 2002, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, CHAI (formerly the Clinton HIV/AIDS Initiative), has been assisting developing countries in implementing large-scale, integrated HIV care, treatment, and prevention programs. Our ultimate objectives are to make high-quality HIV/AIDS and malaria care and treatment available to all who need it, and to partner with governments and other stakeholders to strengthen healthcare systems and develop sustainable strategies to overcome obstacles to scale-up.

The Manager of Product Development (MPD) will oversee a portfolio of technical initiatives to optimize pharmaceutical products for Developing Market use. The MPD should possess, or will be expected to rapidly develop, deep knowledge of and strategic perspectives on supply-side issues pertaining to access to medicinesareas including drug pricing, drug development (new drugs, improved formulations of existing drugs, and generics), drug manufacturing, regulatory issues, and procurement practices. The MPD will be expected to be a thought leader on product development and market introduction related issues, and be held accountable for showing substantial results in relatively short time frames. The MPD will develop and execute strategies for developing novel formulations and new doses of existing products, and translating that development into the approval and launch of products in the marketplace. The MPD will draw upon expertise of members of the Access Team and external partners, and, where expertise is lacking, enhance it through recruitment of appropriate volunteers or consultants. The MPD will be responsible for representing CHAI on access-to-medicines issues both internally and externally and will cultivate strong relationships with senior executives of pharmaceutical companies, research organizations, and regulators.

Responsibilities:

- Oversee a portfolio of technical initiatives to optimize pharmaceutical products for Developing Market use.
- Develop and execute strategies for developing novel formulations and new doses of existing products, and translate that development activity into the approval and launch of products in the marketplace.
- Identify appropriate development partners to conduct R&D work to support the development of new pharmaceutical products and monitor and direct research at those partners.
- Develop relationships with pharmaceutical manufacturers and regulators to support the commercialization and regulatory approval of new pharmaceutical products.
- Represent CHAI at relevant meetings with external parties and conferences.
- Develop strategy for market introduction and uptake of new formulations, including doing analytical work to develop business cases for new product introductions.
- Be available to travel up to 25% of time.

Requirements

Qualifications:

- Ph.D. or MD in a technical field related to pharmaceutical formulation development.
- Minimum 3-5 years private sector work experience.
- Exceptional analytical (qualitative and quantitative) and communication (written and verbal) skills. Ability to communicate effectively with people of varied professional, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
- Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement new initiatives.
- Ability to be effective in high-pressure situations, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, and set priorities.
- Strong desire to work in a fast-paced, limited-structure, high-pressure, multicultural environment.
- Ability to absorb and synthesize a broad range of information, including financial, regulatory, clinical and scientific information.
- Detail-oriented with strong organization skills.
- High level of proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, PowerPoint and Word.
- Willingness to travel.
- Fluency in English.

Optional:

- Experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology or medical device industry.
- Familiarity with global health issues.
- Experience managing the implementation of complex projects across multiple time zones.
- Solid familiarity with business principles, strategy, and terminology.
