Patent Counsel, BioProducts

Patent Counsel, BioProducts. The objective of this position is to provide prudent, ethical, landscape-aware, and law-informed solutions to issues facing Eli Lilly and Company in its discovery and development of biological products and peptides. The position exists within a highly efficient, collegial, collaborative work environment. Contributions to efficiency, collegiality, and collaboration are expected.



KEY OBJECTIVES/DELIVERABLES:


Draft and prosecute patent applications in all jurisdictions in accord with business requirements, patent laws, and Lilly policies and procedures


Analyze risks with appropriate consideration of business objectives and the environment, and develop sound tactical approaches to providing solutions that are prudent, ethical, landscape-aware, and law-informed as described above


Advise teams and management about exclusivity, freedom to operate, due diligence, contract, licensing, and litigation issues in a manner consistent with the law, ethics, and Lilly policies; communicate advice in a manner understandable to the lay person


Become and/or remain well-versed in US and global laws, court precedents, and regulations pertinent to biological pharmaceutical products; apply knowledge appropriately to accomplish items 1-3 above


Prioritize and manage projects with some oversight; contribute to implementation of new policies and procedures; lead task-directed teams


Contribute to efficiency, collegiality, and collaboration

Requirements

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:


Bachelors degree or higher in a technical field that, together with prior experience, provides sufficient ability to understand technical information related to biological product discovery and development, to communicate well with scientists and management, and to achieve Key Objectives

Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) degree from an accredited U.S. institution

2 years of experience in a law firm or in industry working on patent matters relating to biological products, pharmaceuticals and/or biotechnology; at least two full years of the experience must be as a patent attorney

Admitted to bar in at least one US jurisdiction and licensed to represent clients in patent matters before the USPTO

At least 3 years experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications relating to biological products, pharmaceuticals and/or biotechnology

Qualified candidate must be legally authorized to be employed in the United States. Lilly does not anticipate providing sponsorship for employment visa status (e.g., H-1B or TN status) for this position.


ADDITIONAL SKILLS/PREFERENCES:


Ability to organize self, to multi-task effectively, to satisfactorily complete projects with deadlines on time, and to direct others

Experience with and knowledge of biological product discovery, development, commercialization, and/or litigation

Likelihood to succeed at Patent Counsel and higher positions

Expectation of being able to consistently achieve Key Objectives

Strong Law School performance

Active involvement in intellectual property organizations

Leadership of community or professional organizations

Effective as individual contributor, team member, and leader

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Excellent interpersonal skills


OTHER CONSIDERATIONS:


Office work located at Lilly Corporate Center or Lilly Technology Center, Indianapolis Indiana. Some travel may be required.
