Position Objective The Scientist will be a member of the Manufacturing Science team (MSG) responsible for technical troubleshooting of products and manufacturing processes, for the development and transfer of new products, and for initiating process improvements in organic chemistry production at the Eugene site. Essential Functions Advance the capability of organic chemistry production through improvement of manufacturing processes, investigation and development of alternative synthetic methods, failure investigation, and integration of new equipment. Independently conduct and investigate procedures for the multi-step synthesis of organic materials. Develop and characterize improved methods for increased control, quality, yield, efficiency. Produce and analyze high-quality materials in accordance with a manufacturing plan. Recognize and correct manufacturing problems through root cause analysis, identification of key variables, conduction of appropriate experiments, validation and documentation of new processes. Develop new products and technologies through the New Product Introduction (NPI) process. Work closely with product development, R&D, manufacturing and quality to meet both internal and external customer needs Train and provide technical guidance to the manufacturing sciences and production teams in more advanced technical skills, trouble-shooting, process improvements, and safe laboratory practices. Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competing technologies and/or products and attendance of scientific seminars and meetings. Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures. Requirements Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent laboratory skills in synthetic chemistry. Demonstrated ability to investigate and solve problems through root cause analysis, well designed experiments, data analysis and interpretation. Ability to develop, evaluate and characterize solutions and to implement new procedures into a routine manufacturing environment Experience in the validation, tech transfer, and / or optimization of manufacturing processes. Experience with design of experiment, statistical process control and related problem solving tools in the manufacturing environment. Strong technical writing skills as evidenced by the ability to prepare technical reports, product transfer documents, clear and effective manufacturing protocols and SOPs. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and execute on multiple and changing projects and priorities. Ability to work under pressure with strict attention to deadlines and details The ability to work well in a collaborative team environment is essential.Education MS in synthetic organic chemistry, applied physical chemistry, synthetic biochemistry or other closely related discipline, or the equivalent knowledge and experience.Experience Requires at least five (5) years experience in synthetic chemistry within a research or manufacturing environment. Demonstrated proficiency in the application of advanced synthetic organic chemistry techniques and use of common analytical instrumentation is required. Experience with process design, scale-up, new product development, process transfer and validation is strongly preferred.
