Job Description JOB PURPOSEThe purpose of this position is to support research and development activities and application testing of novel, high-quality reagents through performance of routine and non-routine characterization of materials and products employing standard analytical methodologies. This position also includes operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of a variety of analytical instrumentation. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Working in a collaborative team environment, perform characterization and testing of organic and inorganic materials and products for use in new and existing research, biomedical and biotechnological applications. Adapt, develop and document new analytical methodologies as required, transferring methods from R&D environment to Operations for routine use in material and product testing as required.
- Interface with external collaborators and contract laboratories, coordinate sample shipment, sample analyses, and subsequently compile data obtained for analyses performed for assigned materials and products.
- Impact business opportunities through successful completion of testing and instrument maintenance tasks, new project and program proposals, and contributions toward improvement of existing products and processes.
- Support management and manufacturing decisions through analysis materials, testing data and troubleshooting of anomalies.

Requirements

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Requires in-depth knowledge of the theories, practices and procedures of analytical chemistry as are typically obtained through an advanced degree in chemistry or a closely related field of science. Also requires extensive hands-on experience with different analytical instrumentation (i.e., mass spectrometry, high performance liquid chromatography, atomic absorption, UV/VIS, FT-IR, gas chromatography, fluorescence spectroscopy, NMR, etc.). Familiarity with tandem mass spectrometry instrumentation (e.g., quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry, QTOF/MS) desired.
- Demonstrated competence in evaluation of raw materials and techniques and procedures for manufacturing reagents, systems, products and/or other technologies. A thorough knowledge and understanding of experimental design with a demonstrated ability to contribute effectively on project and troubleshooting teams is required.
- The ability to setup a research plan, conduct the necessary experimental work, report and publish results, which may lead to the completion of new products or revised testing procedures. Ability to make detailed observations, independently analyze data, and interpret results; design and conduct well-controlled experiments; devise protocols for routine use; advise supervisor on needed materials and equipment; and to suggest protocol improvements.
- Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise and accurate manner. Ability to work in a team environment, collaborate with colleagues. Must be able to provide technical mentoring to less experienced staff and willing to receive mentoring from more senior chemists.
- Excellent writing skills as evidenced by the ability to prepare technical summaries; product transfer documents; protocols for internal use; and maintain detailed, current and accurate laboratory records. Must be computer literate in common MS Office software and be able to learn other basic software applications.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to efficiently evaluate prioritize and handle multiple and changing priorities and projects. Ability to work under pressure with strict attention to deadlines and details.WORKING CONDITIONSWorks in a laboratory environment. Is required to lift up to 40 lbs. May be required to stand for long periods of time while performing duties. Must be able to work safely with chemicals and hazardous materials. Must be able to work overtime and flexible shifts.Education MS in synthetic organic chemistry, applied physical chemistry, analytical chemistry or other closely related discipline, or the equivalent knowledge and experience.Experience Requires at least five (5) years experience in analytical chemistry within a research or manufacturing environment. Demonstrated proficiency in the application of advanced analytical chemistry techniques and familiarity with common organic synthesis techniques is required. Experience with process design, scale-up, new product development, process transfer and validation is strongly preferred.
